Hello Folks.
My name is James Traverse. I just joined this forum after finding you through a search on Wayne Dyer (I saw part of his PBS show a couple of days ago).
I have been involved with studying and teaching yoga for some 30 years. Presently I call my approach Nisarga Yoga (inspired by Nisargadatta Maharaj - who I'm told had an influence on Wayne Dyer).
I liked the insight offered by Dr Dyer when he spoke of inspiration as something 'getting hold' of you... and as a means of introduction I would like to share a somewhat different take on this as per my Yoga practice.
I feel that most folks miss the true significance of Breathing. Sure they say that it is obviously essential, yet I feel that most really do not get it...
You ARE Breathing; You are Being ~ Breathed.
When folks speak of Breathing, most only consider the Inspiration and Expiration called Respiration (In-Spirit-action; Ex-Spirit-action; Re-Spirit-ing) ...
yet everyone knows that the life giving energy that is taken into the lungs does not remain there - it is taken into the body and circulated via the circulatory system (this is called Circulation and it has the same structure as Respiration - flow through arteries is akin to inhalation; flow through veins is akin to exhalation and the flow is punctuated by transition pauses between heartbeats which is akin to the transition pauses between inhale-exhale and exhale-inhale).
In this light Breath-ing is Circulation ~ Respiration; it is the intercourse (yogic union) of Respiration~Circulation that gives birth to your life as the current moment.
It is obvious that this is the central Current of Being because if either of these flows stops for more than just a few minutes - you're physically dead.
Don't believe me - wherever you are right now try this - hold your breath... (most practically you do this by restraining your respiration - do not do this by restraing your circulation as that can be very harmful)....
.... see that after a short while, you will have no choice other than to breathe again as respiration.
You are Being ~ Breathed - there is a natural intelligence that is within you (and is you) that insists that you allow this flow. You can override it for short periods of time, yet wisdom dictates that you not only allow it but that you find ways to harmonize and optimize its flow.
In this way - Spirit has got 'hold of' you and insists on manifesting through you - AND as you .
The practice of Yoga asks that you first see this fundamental fact (and embrace the knowledge of the structured flow of this natural intelligence) so that you are in union with Cosmic Intelligence - the direct means to accomplish this is the simple process of releasing and welcoming a quiet breath.
Nisarga Yoga is as simple as Breathing
And it is as complicated as Life.
Namaste'
